Thank You / Throwback Thursday!

So it’s been almost a month since TEDxUCCI. We’ve posted our photos on Flickr and are just waiting on TED to approve our videos and publish them publicly. If we’re lucky, the whole world will be able to view the talks on YouTube this weekend. Yay!

It’s so hard to contain the excitement of finally showing TEDxUCCI’s talks to the world. Uploading the videos was like being transported back to the day of the event. The ideas are still interesting, the jokes are just as funny and the messages very much inspiring. Of course, nothing beats being there in person, so make sure you stay tuned for the upcoming TEDx events late this year and early 2016 (yes, we have begun making plans!).

To those of you who supported TEDxUCCI in any way, we express our utmost gratitude. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our sponsors who made this event possible: The University College of the Cayman Islands, Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, DQ, PD’s Sports Bar and Grill, Universal Air Conditioning, Casa de Soto, Business Solutions Technologies Group Ltd and Foster’s Food Fair-IGA.

Thanks to the faculty, staff, students and friends of UCCI for their tireless efforts to ensure the success of the event. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our speakers and performers for the many voluntary hours that went into preparing and rehearsing. And finally, thanks to our attendees for their enthusiastic involvement in TEDxUCCI (and the top marks they gave the event and the planning team–hooray!).

See you again next time! In the meantime, keep the conversations going on Facebook, Twitter and this blog. 🙂

72 hours to go before TEDxUCCI!

The air is charged with excitement as TEDxUCCI is only three days away! It seems like it was only yesterday when we first assembled teams and assigned roles. It’s hard to believe that in 72 hours, we get to make history with the first-ever TEDx event at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

Perhaps what makes TEDxUCCI extra-special is that it is student-run and student-led. Our awesome young men and women sought sponsorship; set the criteria for and chose speakers and attendees; developed the programme and have also taken on several other logistics and event management duties. These on top of juggling work and family commitments, other extra-curricular activities and preparing for final examinations… they really set out to accomplish a herculean task!

We are also glad for the support and guidance that we have received from our hardworking faculty and staff and of course, our wonderful volunteers from the wider community. Their contributions have been so instrumental in enabling TEDxUCCI to uphold the TEDx brand.

Everyone who has signed-up to attend this event is in for a treat. And we can’t wait to see  everything come together on Friday, April 24th.

To get everyone fired up, we’ve been using our Facebook page to feature TEDx videos that touch on our theme, “FEARLESS: What would you do if you had no fear?”. Have a look and feel free to share.

Remember, we start at 9am on Friday so make sure you’re there early to check-in and get settled before things get busy. See you there!

APPLICATIONS CLOSING FOR “FEARLESS” TEDxUCCI

“What would you do if you had no fear?”

That’s the question that will be examined from multiple viewpoints on April 24th when TEDxUCCI takes place on the campus at the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI). And the time to apply for a seat at that discussion is rapidly drawing to a close on Monday, April 13th.

The vision of this day-long event of discussion, dance and music is to inspire people to step out of their comfort zones, think innovatively, and exchange ideas fearlessly. According to TEDxUCCI curator, Dr. J.D. Mosley-Matchett, “We’re excited that this celebration of ideas is really being student-run and student-led. This event is being designed from the ground up to be a way to enrich the UCCI community and its supporters in a way that can reach a global audience. Many TEDx presentations have gone viral, in part due to the power of this amazing brand.”

Presentations at this first-ever UCCI event will range from environmental concerns, personal experiences, singing, dancing, and inspirational stories. The roster of speakers is available online at www.TEDxUCCI.ky

Anyone interested in being an active audience member during this daylong event on April 24th is encouraged to apply at www.TEDxUCCI.ky with applications being accepted through Monday, April 13th. Only 75 participants will be accepted to be part of this experience, so the public is encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

In part, it’s the exclusive nature of TEDx events that makes them so interesting. As Dr. Mosley-Matchett notes, “We expect to generate a lot of buzz simply because not everyone will be able to experience this first TEDxUCCI. The people who attend will be active participants in a thought provoking environment.

“FEARLESS” THEME INSPIRES INVOLVEMENT AT TEDxUCCI

“What would you do if you had no fear?”

That’s the question that will be examined from multiple viewpoints on April 24th when TEDxUCCI takes place on the campus at the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI). And the goal is to have not just speakers discuss the topic, but to review it through dance, music and art, as well. The vision of this day-long event is to inspire people to step out of their comfort zones, think innovatively, and exchange ideas fearlessly.

Indeed, it’s the international appeal of the videos found on the TED Conference website (www.TED.com) that distinguishes this conference different from others that have taken place on the UCCI campus. The TED organization has built a world-wide reputation for “Ideas Worth Spreading.” In that spirit, TEDx is a global program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

Anyone interested in learning more about TEDxUCCI is encouraged to go online to http://TEDxUCCI.ky for information as it becomes available. Applications to present at TEDxUCCI will be accepted through Friday, March 6th. Applications to participate as part of the TEDxUCCI audience will become available on Friday, March 20th and only 75 participants will be accepted to be part of this experience.

In part, it’s the exclusive nature of TEDx events that makes them so interesting. As Dr. Mosley-Matchett notes, “We expect to generate a lot of buzz simply because not everyone will be able to experience this first TEDxUCCI.
